Mrs. Govindarajoo Vasugidevi (Mrs. Ganesan) started dancing at the age of six. As a student of Mr K P Bhaskar and Mrs Shanta Bhaskar (trained in India) of Bhaskar’s Academy of Dance – which is now known as Nitralaya Aesthetic Society. Did a variety of stage, television and cultural programs for various important functions. Groomed to do lead roles by Aunty Bhaskar in all the Academy Shows during her time with them. In 1972, came in first for the Pongal Dance Competition in the Jurong Constituency. And what an honour, the judge was from the famous dance school in India Kalashetra. In 1975, she was chosen as one of the three dancers by Srimathi Kamala Laxmanan (Famous India’s Top Dancer and Cine Artiste) after taking part in her workshop conducted by her, her sister and her troupe. And also proud to say that she did a Lead Role with her. It was a Dance Drama staged both in Singapore and Malaysia. She were chosen to represent Singapore by Singapore Tourist Promotion Board to perform in Hong Kong, Australia, Italy and Malaysia.

In 1978 – Joined Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society – Under the Tutorship of Mr and Mrs Balagopalan – whom later became Principal of The Famous Dance School of Kalashetra in South India.

In 1979 – Joined The National Dance Company of Singapore and performed extensively.

Then came in Miss Uma Rao – also from Kalashetra whom moulded Mrs Ganesan more into a better dancer and that made her score the highest mark in SIFAS and was chosen as the Top Dancer of 1987 and was given the “Best Dance Student” Award of 1987. After that came in Miss Shanta Ponnudurai, also from Kalashetra India and started preparing Mrs Ganesan for her Dance Arangetram (Graduation). She was a perfectionist – whom groomed Mrs.Ganesan further and made her do a great performance for her Graduation In 1988.

The Famous Karaikudi Krishnamoorthi Sir – Played The Mirdangam for her Arangetram. Along the way did lots of programs for SIFAS and lead roles.

And also Blessed By The Famous Dr Padmasupramaniam – twice.

Started to teach at age 18 and still doing.

Taught in Bukit Batok CC for 8 years from 1990-1998. Also taught at Jurong Spring CC -1 year and Taman Jurong CC for almost 2 years.

Mrs Ganesan took off from there and started preparing her career as a Dance Teacher. Started teaching in schools for more than 30 years. Along the way did her own learning journey of other ethnic dance forms.

Taught in many schools – moulding students into perfect dancers – bringing out not only their best in them – but also made them enjoy dance whole heartedly. Her students were the first to win television‘s first dance competition many years ago and she is very proud to announce that. Did lots of workshops in schools for non-Indian students.

Numerous performances and dance dramas. Mrs Ganesan was also with Apsaras Arts with the famous Dance Teacher Neila Sathyalingam for 5 years.

Mrs Ganesan is still teaching in both primary and secondary schools and Junior College for 30 years.
Have done lots of stage and outside choreography. Her students have won many dance competitions. For example Commonwealth Secondary School won RI’s dance competition at their 1st try in 2003. They won twice at RI. And also did NDP for them in 2003. They won again at Tanjong Katong Girls’ School and they also won a Dance Competition in 2018, organised by Cedar Girls and Victory Junior College.

Mrs Ganesan was invited in 2017, twice as a Judge for both Classical and Folk Dance Competitions and also in 2018 for a Classical Dance Competition as the Senior Judge.

Year 2000 – Joined the Indian Martial Arts known as Kalari Payatu. Did sword fight actions and later combined it into her own dance form using sword. Travelled to Perth Australia in 2001 and took part in a big stage programme there.

Won many gold, silver, bronze and Gold With Honors and Distinctions in SYF Competitions. And up till now working her best to be a good choreographer and a good teacher. Always creating a good rapport with the students and teachers.

In 2004, started her own Dance Group and now giving it a new name – Vasugi Arts.
